Potentiometers Care

30-9-25

Potentiometers (or “pots”) are critical components in mixers, amplifiers, and vintage audio gear. Over time, dust and oxidation can build up inside, causing crackling noises, volume drops, or inconsistent behavior when turning the knob.

Common mistakes to avoid

❌ Do not spray from the outside through the shaft. This washes away the damping grease inside the potentiometer, removing the smooth turning feel and potentially shortening its lifespan.

❌ Avoid universal sprays or WD-40-type products – they leave residues and can damage the carbon tracks.

❌ Never force a stiff knob – it can break the shaft or the internal wiper.

Safe cleaning recommendations

  • Access the potentiometer from inside the unit by opening the device and reaching the housing directly.
  • Use contact cleaners designed for audio electronics (e.g., DeoxIT Fader, Kontakt 60 + WL, or similar).
  • Apply sparingly – a small amount is enough. Avoid flooding the component.
  • Rotate the knob gently several times after applying to distribute the cleaner evenly.
  • If the issue persists, the potentiometer may require professional servicing or replacement.

Preventive tips

  • Keep your gear covered when not in use to minimize dust.
  • Maintain stable environmental conditions to avoid oxidation.
  • Schedule periodic servicing if you use your equipment intensively (clubs, studios, live shows).

✨ Proper cleaning restores sound quality while preserving the smooth feel and extending the life of your potentiometers.
